The Revolution Will Not Be Algorithmic (Or Maybe It Will)
Why I haven’t been writing on Substack lately.
I've always tried, as an artist and simply as a human being, to describe the world around me. My world within. Maybe it's because of who I am.
I was born in a small town in France. I’ve lived in several countries. I come from immigrant parents. I’ve known marginalization, racism, discrimination. These things shape how I see, how I feel, how I create.
That’s why my music has always carried something beyond rhythm. I talk about what surrounds us, what haunts us, what we ignore too easily. I’ve said this in interviews, in magazines, and even here, on this very Substack.
Some of you subscribed because you read those pieces. You cared. And then… I stopped posting. For six months.
But something happened.
Since February, I’ve been publishing on Instagram. Twice a week. My thoughts, my contradictions, my questions. Short posts, like fragments of conversations. Topics linked to music, to society, to what I write here. And the resonance surprised me.
Maybe it’s because, after Covid, we started talking, or pretending to, about mental health, about bringing marginalized communities back into the conversation. Especially those same communities that actually created the music we now monetize and celebrate.
But reality caught up. Inflation. The rise of fascism. The unbearable images from Gaza for two years, now more brutal than ever. Artists are waking up. Audiences too. They’re seeing how cultural institutions, festivals like KKR, Superstruct, Sónar, Field Day, Boiler Room, receive funding connected to arms investments, military interests.
And the question rises:
Will the revolution be algorithmic?
Will the same systems that amplify injustice now suddenly amplify change?
Maybe. Maybe not.
Another platform, another voice lost in the noise. Or maybe one more thought that cuts through.
So yes, for those of you who’ve missed my words here, I hear you. I’m still thinking, writing, playing, fighting. And if you’ve found me on Instagram, you know the conversation is still alive.
Let’s keep it going. Follow me on instagram @jaymiesilk if you wanna read more of my thoughts, share your thoughts, DM me.
